You replaced all your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs long ago. You’ve switched over to natural nontoxic cleaning and personal care products, and you bring reusable grocery bags to the store 9 times out of ten. Yeah, you’re feeling pretty green, but you’re ready for the next step.

So, how ’bout this? Insulating your water tank has to be one of the easiest ways to save energy, after installing a shower shutoff valve and putting pipe wrap insulation on your hot water pipes, that is.

Check out this uber easy & clear video. It’ll hold your hand as you tackle your own water tank. If you can’t find the type of kit shown in the video, go for this shiny bubbly sheet of insulation. I got mine from a bulk roll at Rona.

And hey, while you’re at it, pick up 3 or 4 of these foam pipe wraps. They’re literally about 80ยข each, and a monkey could install them.

It’s also a good idea to set your water tank temperature to 49 degrees C or 120 degrees F. Your tank will burn up less fuel or power, and you’ll still get hot water. Just add less cold water to your shower!

A whopping 1,020 Canadians who have pledged to take this action on CBC’s Million Acts of Green have saved a total of 101,700 Kg of greenhouse gases from being released into the atmosphere!
