I’m actually impressed! This most recent option is a company in Saskatoon called Redl that makes high end cabinetry, but out of MDF that is certified by the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). After a touch of research, I learned that SCS uses the same criteria for forest products as FSC. Called ‘Medite II’, this MDF is made from 100% recovered and recycled wood fiber combined with a formaldehyde-free resin. What Redl does, is applies a veneer made from reconstituted wood from a fast-growing tree to the MDF. The veneer looks identical to whatever wood style you choose. Still, I’m lacking information about what the fast-growing tree is, where it’s from, and also where the MDF is from.
I had previously discounted this as an option because the appliance store told me that the tree grows in Africa, then it’s shipped to Italy to be made into the veneer. Sounds like a lot of CO2 to me, but at this point it may be our only viable option.
