Admit it. Temperatures have dropped, furnaces around the country have kicked in, and friendly Natural Resources Canada radio clips are back on air reminding us to don extra sweaters before cranking up the thermostat.
This year, shake off seasonal chills and blahs and get an edge on your home’s heat loss. Consumer Reports Greener Choices newsletter lists a swath of actions that will keep your hard earned heat indoors – longer.
Think the tips are same old? I know you’ve heard it all before, but can you honestly say that you’ve done them all? Chances are you can’t. And that’s ok, just keep humbly plugging away.
Do what you can and choose two – or even one project from the list to implement at home. Last year in just 20 minutes I put an insulating jacket on my water heater for only $25. I bought what I needed from a bulk roll at the local Rona. This year, it’ll be insulating behind a wall slated for renovation.
Why not go for gold and replace a few leaky windows with new efficient ones? Or, re-insulate your attic with cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper. My folks just did it for only $400 (1000 square feet of attic space) and can expect to boost their attic R-value by 20 at a payback in under five years from their savings. If you do, be sure to see what rebates you qualify for to buffer the cost of upgrades.
Energy efficiency retrofits may not be sexy, but they’ll save you some cash and keep you warmer despite your wardrobe choices.

Andrea,
I want to give my parents a green christmas present this year. I want to get a home evaluation done for them to see how they can improve heat savings. Do you know who can do this kind of assessment?
Thanks,
James
