Green living just got easier for people who are looking for an affordable, environmentally friendly and energy efficient home.

Ecological Homes recently launched its new ready-to-assemble green home packages at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show and the Go Green Eco Expo.  The Edmonton-based company wants to put green living within reach of the average home buyer.

According to Ecological’s co-owner Les Hagen, a green home shouldn’t put consumers in the red.  “Ecological Homes wants to place quality green homes within reach of the average home buyer.  This innovative home package will help to meet the increasing consumer demand for affordable green housing.”

The green home package includes various solar energy design features, super-insulated structural wall panels, a high-efficiency condensing gas furnace and on-demand hot water heater, durable eco-friendly materials and finishes, and superior indoor air quality.

The home package is designed to meet the rigorous LEED for Homes® green building standard and has been “energy tuned” using the HOT2000® computer modeling program developed by Natural Resources Canada.

The quick-build homes utilize several panelized and pre-fab components that are designed to simplify assembly and reduce labour. Hagen believes that affordability and durability aren’t mutually exclusive.

“Our packages are designed to be eco-friendly and affordable without compromising quality and durability.  We have selected numerous high-quality products that exceed current building standards such as Hardie Plank siding, 50-year shingles, heavy-load roof and floor trusses, and high-performance Energy Star windows and doors.”

The basic package—a 1300 square foot, three bedroom, two storey home—will cost approximately $105,000 plus GST.  The basic package will not include a foundation, basement, or any interior finishings.  Ecological Homes is also offering custom home packages for consumers who want to build their green dream home.

The package options include a structural insulated panel basement, matching garage package, solar hot water and electrical panels, high-efficiency fireplace and central cooling, and a rainwater recovery system.  Ecological Homes will also supply eco-friendly interior packages with cabinets, flooring, millwork, doors, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, and energy-efficient lighting.
