Happy Earth Day, Canada!

How often do you pause to practice gratitude for the planet? Thanks to Earth Day, it’ll be at least once a year.

And what ’s to celebrate? Everything, of course! From the air you breathe and the water you drink to the food you eat and the clothes you wear.

Everything we need and use comes from the Earth. Think about your favorite things like wine, chocolate, fresh sheets, sunny afternoons, and give thanks to the plants, animals, elements, and ecosystems that make it all possible.

Earth Day is also a great time to celebrate and protect our environment and the wonders it provides, like wildlife, soil, and even moonlight. Nature’s abundance of beauty and wisdom can renew and enlighten all of us when we open our eyes to it.

Wondering what to do for Earth Day? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  1. Feast your eyes on some magnificent natural sights, ideally in person, and on screen if need be.
  2. Take a walk with friends or family in a natural space, city park, or your own neighbourhood. Appreciate the day regardless of any rain, cloud, snow, or wind in your area.
  3. Enjoy a meal using locally grown seasonal foods, organic if possible.
  4. Find out what events are going on in your area in celebration of Earth Day, and plan to attend them. Walk, ride your bike, or take public transit to events when possible.
  5. Choose one action or change to enact starting this week. Maybe you’ll start composting, grow a vegetable garden, pledge to cycle to work 2-3 days each week, or insulate your attic.
  6. Make a donation to an environmental organization.
  7. If you must watch TV this week, watch one of the following and be inspired:
  • The Blue Planet
  • Winged Migration
  • Microcosmos
