The Eco-Sense Project - The Eco-Sense project is our attempts (Ann & Gord) at creating a beautiful and inspirational home that encompasses the intent of sustainability. The solar and wind power, solar thermal heating of the floor and domestic hot water, living roof, rain water harvesting, grey water re-use, composting toilets, organic gardens, and passive solar design are the core to helping us attain status of a “Living Building” . A step beyond LEED Platinum, we hope to use this creation as a platform to educate others on sustainable systems, natural building, and ability to live a reasonable life. |

Mill Creek Net Zero Home When we moved into our newly purchased 1954 raised bungalow in Edmonton seven years ago, I was determined to make it an efficient home. After major renovations, it earned a rating of 71 by an Energuide for Homes, roughly that of “a typical new house”. Then I realized that typical new houses are very poorly built, and that our upgraded home still consumes a vast amount of energy. In the summer of 2005, the 92-year old house two doors down from us came up for sale. We bought it, and the Mill Creek NetZero Home project was born. |

Shire Strawbale Home - The Shire Strawbale Home was started late in the summer of 2007 on a hectare of family land on the Shire Lane in Emyvale, PEI. It is a hybrid in-fill bale home incorporating passive solar, energy efficient design and a small footprint. Almost entirely built by ourselves (aside from plumbing and wiring) it has been a life altering experience, stressful, overwhelming and incredibly fulfilling all at once. |
